While helping a fellow MySpacer decode his engine, I stumbled upon the following link with awesome data. You can trace casting number and engine codes with the sublinks on the page as well as decipher the date code for your particular engine. This is especially useful if the engine currently in your car is not original, or if you're looking to resore a car with a 'correct' replacement motor.

One thing I've found that isn't presented in the chart is that around 1976 or so, Pontiac stopped stamping the VIN under the timing cover. Instead, they began locating the VIN either on the side of the block or on the deck under the passenger side head.
