Hey guys....bad news....yesterday i was backing the T/A out of the garage and it caught fire...THANK GOD no one else was in it and that I had a fire extinguisher close by to keep it from burning to the ground. We were getting ready to go on a cruize with the kids. I was backing it around to get them and things loaded. As I was backing up i noticed a little smoke coming out under the hood on my side. When i opened the door, to go check it out i could feel a massive heat wave coming from under my car so i knew it was on fire. By the time I got to the extinguisher there were flames coming out around the shaker and i could see my paint bubbling. Talk about a sickening feeling. I dont know exactly what caused it, im thinking something with the starter. That was still smoking after the fire was out on the top side. Something at the bottom end just kept relighting...finally that was out. It could have been alot worse for sure.
But, my baby is out of commission. All the wiring, plastic etc under the hood are trashed. Luckilyl got the fire out before it got into the interior or even worse...the gas tank. The car was sitting right beside the house and garage...

So Im back to square one and completely sick to my stomach. Going from the nationals last weekend to this weekend really bites.

Man its hard to post bad news.

Kevin

Yes im sorry to hear this too, i have had a couple of engine fires ( not on my bird ) the first one i panicked and opened the hood, not a good idea, the second i just had to watch and wait as the fire service came to my aid.

Not a nice position to be in and i understand the frustration, good luck to you.

Ouch! There's just nothing one can say at a time like this but just ouch. Although the good Lord is good and it didn't get any worse, it still hurts and we share in your pain.

Some pix to share. Word to the wise...ALWAYS carry a fire extinguisher in your car. Luckily this happened at my house and the extinguisher that is normally in the car was right inside the house.
Thanks everyone for their comments...

Sorry to hear this Bud! It could've been worse though.

Glad no one got hurt and the car is repairable.

Pete

Kevin,

Have you had any more time to investigate? What gets me is your report about something in the starter area re-igniting. I wounder if you might have had a rodent (squirrel or garage rat) chew the insulation on the positive cable leading to the starter solenoid? Rats like to chew on the insulation, too. Had one in my attic knawing on the Romex leading to my water heater. He got a 220 volt jolt for dessert!

Anyway, that wire is always energized and if the bottom of your block looks anything like mine, there's usually an oily, greasy mess that would burn pretty easily.

Lesson to all of us - inspect stuff like that frequently, especially if we only drive them occasionally. And add cleaning the motor to our lists of 'things to do on the car when there's nothing good on TV'!
